  47. INTRODUCTION to WebScan for Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, and Windows NT (i386)

  49. McAfee WebScan for Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, and Windows NT is the ideal
  50. tool for protecting your workstations from possible virus infections via
  51. e-mail and browsing the World Wide Web on the Internet.  To enhance your
  52. system's ability to help you communicate and gather information efficiently,
  53. WebScan also includes electronic mail (Pegasus Mail) and World Wide Web
  54. browser (SPRY Mosaic) components which are automatically linked to WebScan
  55. during installation.
  56.  
  57. WebScan operates by linking to installed applications on your Windows
  58. workstation.  These applications automatically launch WebScan whenever files
  59. are downloaded to your local computer, whether they are e-mail attachments
  60. using Pegasus Mail or cc:Mail, or files downloaded from the Internet using
  61. World Wide Web browsers such as SPRY Mosaic, Netscape Navigator, America
  62. Online's web browser, or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. WebScan scans each
  63. file for possible viruses and immediately notifies you if one is detected,
  64. allowing you to delete the file before it has a chance to infect your
  65. system.

  67. WebScan even scans compressed and zipped files (*.zip, *.arc, *.arj)
  68. recursively.  If you elect to save an infected file anyway, you should use
  69. other McAfee products such as VirusScan to "clean" the infected file.
  70.  
  71. WebScan's new polling feature pro-actively scans cc:Mail e-mail attachments
  72. even before you check your mail.  If a possible virus is detected, WebScan
  73. notifies you and sends an e-mail notification to the sender of the infected
  74. message.
  75.  
  76. You can also configure WebScan to send e-mail notification to the system
  77. administrator to quickly contain the infected file from further spread.
  78. Additionally, WebScan can be configured to move the infected message from
  79. your inbox to an "Infected Files" quarantine folder within cc:Mail.

  81. WebScan includes both electronic mail and World Wide Web browser components.
  82. The e-mail component is Pegasus Mail, a solid mail package which enables you
  83. to send and receive electronic messages and attached files across the world
  84. via the Internet.  The browser component is SPRY Mosaic which connects you
  85. to the Internet and allows you to browse the World Wide Web.  SPRY Mosaic
  86. includes support for both LAN connections and dial-up PPP connections.
  87. Together, these components make WebScan a powerful tool to protect your
  88. system from virus infection while you use your system for education, work,
  89. and fun on The Net.

  97. System Requirements
  98.  
  99. Before you install WebScan, you need:
  100.  
  101.     - Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.51 (i386).
  102.  
  103.     - 4MB Memory (RAM).
  104.  
  105.     - 9MB available storage (Hard Disk) space.
  106.  
  107.     - FILES= statement in CONFIG.SYS set to FILES=50 or higher.
  108.  
  109. To use the e-mail and World Wide Web browser components, you may also need:
  110.  
  111.     - A Local Area Network (LAN) connection.
  112.      or
  113.     - A modem, active phone line, and an account with an information
  114.       service, internet service provider, or other dial-up network service.
  115.  
  116. Installing WebScan
  117.  
  118. Use the following procedure to install the WebScan software.
  119.  
  120. To install WebScan, complete the following procedures.
  121. It is recommended that you quit all other Windows applications before
  122. running SETUP.
  123.  
  124. 1.  Select Run from the File menu.
  125.  
  126. 2.  Type A:\SETUP.EXE (or use the path to the WebScan Setup Program) and
  127.     press ENTER.  The License Agreement screen appears.
  128.  
  129. 3.  Read the license agreement and choose Yes to accept the terms.  The
  130.     Welcome screen appears.  If you do not agree with the terms, choose No,
  131.     and Setup will quit.
  132.  
  133. 4.  Click Next.  The User Information screen appears.  Enter your Name and
  134.     Company.  Again, click Next.
  135.  
  136. 5.  In the Setup Type screen, select the appropriate installation type:
  137.     Typical, Compact, or Custom.
  138.  
  139.     "Typical" is recommended for most users and installs all WebScan
  140.     components.  "Compact" installs the minimum WebScan AntiVirus
  141.     components.  "Custom" allows you to choose which components to install
  142.     and is recommended for advanced users.
  143.  
  144. 6.  Select the Destination Directory into which WebScan will be installed.
  145.     The default is:
  146.     C:\McAfee\WebScan
  147.  
  148.     You can change this by clicking "Browse..."  Click Next in the Setup
  149.     Type screen to continue installation.
  150.  
  151. 7.  If you did NOT choose Custom setup, skip to step 8.  Otherwise, you are
  152.     presented with a list of WebScan components to install.  Select the
  153.     appropriate components.  Click Next.
  154.  
  155. 8.  When installing the WebScan browser component, the Installed
  156.     Applications Screen appears.  This lists currently installed
  157.     applications on your system which WebScan can configure to protect your
  158.     system from viruses.  Be sure there is a check mark next to each
  159.     application you would like to protect from downloading infected files.
  160.     Click Next to continue.
  161.  
  162.     Setup checks your system for an existing connection to the Internet.  If
  163.     it finds one, you are prompted whether to maintain your current
  164.     connection as the default, or to set SPRY Mosaic as the default.
  165.  
  166.     If Setup does not initially find an existing Internet connection, you
  167.     are prompted to instruct Setup to run a more thorough secondary search,
  168.     skip the search (you know you DO NOT have another connection), or to
  169.     bypass the search (you know you DO have another connection).
  170.  
  171. 9.  Select a Program Folder in which WebScan should place Program Icons.
  172.     You can choose to add them to an existing Program Group from the list,
  173.     or WebScan will create its own Program Folder, "McAfee WebScan".  Click
  174.     Next.
  175.  
  176. 10. WebScan Setup displays your installation settings and prompts you to
  177.     confirm them before completing the installation.  If you would like to
  178.     change a setting, click Back to the appropriate configuration window,
  179.     make the change, and click Next until you return to the Confirm
  180.     Installation Settings screen.  Click Next to confirm the settings.

  182.     Setup copies the required files to your hard disk and links WebScan to
  183.     the selected applications.

  185. 11. If you chose to link WebScan to Lotus cc:Mail, the cc:Scan configuration
  186.     screen is displayed.  Set the appropriate options and click "Save" to
  187.     continue.
  188.  
  189.     Note:  Leaving the Administrator e-mail ID blank defaults to cc:Mail's
  190.     Administrator.

  192. 12. WebScan Setup displays a list of files which were modified during
  193.     installation, along with a corresponding list of backup files (copies of
